" Some pretext, before ever fielding this I swapped the barrel, bucking, and installed a mosfet. So my review is probably not a great representation of the out-of-the-box experience.
From muzzle to butt of the gun:
-Historic front sight/flash hider is included in the box, orange tip easily removable.
-Front sling mount is steady and fixed to stock (I have had issues with m4's and the sling mount being on the handrail or sight post can cause it to come loose)
-Front swivel sling mount hole is to tolerance (I installed a bipod in it and it is steady)
-Top cover is easy enough to clip on/off; it isn't nearly as thick as the lower polymer stock but it doesn't need to be
-Mock charging handle/bolt comes loose fairly easily; it won't fall out if you don't mess with it but everyone always wants to mess with it :P This is the only external component I really have any issue with, everything else is solid
-Rail mount in the side of the receiver is not threaded historic 12-32 (super uncommon pitch, but I did tap mine and the receiver metal has held thread so far)
-Sight can be used even with bulky goggles on. I had to get a red dot lower 1/3rd co-witness just to be able to aim my M4, but had no issue using irons on this.
-Hop up unit sucks. What sucks the most is that there aren't any aftermarket options. It is difficult to mount a barrel/bucking/nub, and the soft plastic can deform if magazines are not inserted properly. This isn't the guns fault, it just sucks that there isn't a metal option out there
-Hop-up barrel lock is unique to v7. You have to get either an M14-specific barrel or a ZCI (they notch for both types). 509 barrel length.
-Magazine compatibility/availability is good. CYMA 180 round feed (although I did have to shave the release nub on one batch I received, I think it was QC on the mag though).
-Feeding is ok, soft hop up unit plastic and occasionally sketchy mag fit (until modified) I think will hurt the long-term lifetime of the gun. If you are ok swapping hop up units every so often I don't think this is a terrible issue.
-Ambi safety and mag release. I'm a southpaw so this is great. Fire selector is on the right side, but this isn't a big deal.
-Piston/airseal is great out of the box
-Motor torque and speed are well balanced. With mosfet, I was shooting 24 RPM with 7.4v Lipo and 29 with 11.1v. It might be the motor or mosfet limiting the 11.1, but I don't feel anyone needs to shoot faster than that.
-Spring shot hot out of the box, but after break in it now fires within the advertised range.
-v7 gearboxes suck to get into. I haven't opened mine because I don't have any issues and trigger contacts are on the outside. No quick change spring means you need to do a full teardown to turn it into a dmr, but you're probably doing gears and motor for that anyway.
-EXTERNAL WIRING CONTACTS. Makes wiring a mosfet super easy (relatively speaking). 18AWG wire stock means I didn't need to rewire either, just cut and solder.
-I did have 1 of the motor solders fail, but this was after taking it apart and putting back together a few times. The injection molded plastic stock has baffles on the inside (for rigidity), but this makes pulling the wiring out of the back of the stock difficult (easy to snag and break a solder).
-Lot of battery space, albeit the compartment is a little annoying to stuff into (11.1 6000mah fit in with a mosfet).
Overall, why buy this?
-You want a reasonably priced ($250 sale price at time of purchase) gun that shoots great and has upgrade potential
-You don't want an m4 or ak
-You want to build a dmr but need a platform to start with
-You want cheap ambi controls
-You want to get buff
Why shouldn't you buy this?
-It is heavy
-It is long (awful for indoor/cqb)
-It gets expensive to support/maintain vs m4/ak (mag pouches, aftermarket parts are non-existent or more expensive).
-v7 gearbox is unique and not super popular. While it has a lot of strengths over v2/v3, ultimately the availability of parts and knowledge on those gearboxes make them better for most people to own
What about other DMR options?
-G&G M14: More expensive, but uses a modified v2 gearbox which has aftermarket parts support. Magazines are almost impossible to find and way lower capacity, which were my biggest turn-offs.
-SR25: V2 based, more mag availability. The Cyma platinum SR25 is probably a better option than this, but it is significantly more expensive and (I think) less cool. I would probably recommend this over the g&p m14 if you don't want the headache of learning a unique gearbox design.
" This G&P M14 is only for the dedicated DMR/Sniper player. If you are in to running fast and shooting people this is not for you. it is around 8 pounds and closer to 10/11 when loaded and has a scope.
Pros:
-Long range
-Perfect FPS for most fields
Cons-
-misfeeding issues
-squeaky firing
-heavy and not very maneuverable
-2 point straps make it hard for target aquisition
-firing groups are random and inconsistent
