"So, these shells are very strange! I had never seen them before until I saw this listing on Evike for them, and immediately sold them out! So, my problem is that the real steel SMLE and Kar98k use completely different ammo. The rounds are different calibers and the cases and even the rims are completely different between the two real steel rifle rounds. But the Double Bell SMLE shell ejector uses the same 8mm Mauser replica shells as the Kar98k! UGH! I understand why they make it like that, for ease of manufacture and standardization. It is also convenient that I can share a pool of shells with two different weapons. This is airsoft after all. It doesn't really matter what the shells look like. But I wanted to at least have some difference between the two rifles' shells. And here it is! The color on these shells is not the best, but it is WAY better than the shiny silver of the regular Double Bell Kar98k shells. Also, the rubber O-ring in the tip of the round is a bit tighter and holds the BBs in better. The silver shells have a bad reputation of having the BBs pop out of the tips when handled or dropped. These brass colored shells don't do that. So MAJOR improvement! I decided to use these out of the SMLE as they are *specifically* made for that weapon, and use the silver shells only out of my Double Bell Kar98k. However, for whatever reason, these TOTALLY SUCK when used with the SMLE. First, they shoot 10 FPS slower on average than the silver shells. But they are WILDLY inconsistent. Sometimes I get 200 FPS and another will be 320 FPS like it normally shoots (this is with 0.25g BBs) Second, they basically don't feed at all. See, if you look at the back of the rim, the edge of the rim is cut at an angle. The silver shells are like this too but it is a much sharper angle and only for about 1 millimeter around the circumference of the rim. The SMLE shells have the slant cut about 3mm wide. This doesn't sound like a big problem and seems like it would help with loading/extracting. The slanted edge on the outside of the rim helps the extractor get around the rim and grab the shell. However, the shallower and longer slant make the bolt jump over them when attempting to chamber a round! This is infuriating! The silver shells did that occasionally but these shells are unusable out of the Double Bell SMLE. So, I tried them in my Kar98k. And guess what? They work GREAT! Out of my Double Bell Kar98k, they shoot 10 FPS faster than the silver shells, feed and eject much nicer and require less force to operate, and look great while doing all that! My KAr98k works so much smoother with these brass colored shells. It isn't as jerky and the shells chamber so much more graceful. I don't have to yank and jerk the bolt as much to get it to cycle good. I love them for my Kar98k! So I just switched which gun use which shells. I have Kar98k shells in my SMLE and SMLE shells in my Kar98k. I *highly* recommend these shells but ONLY for a double bell Kar98k. DO NOT buy these with the intention of using them out of the SMLE. I know that these are literally made for the SMLE but they suck. Use the silver Kar98k shells and buy those if you want extra shells for the SMLE. Now the quantity can get tricky since the SMLE magazine holds 6+1 and the Kar98k shells come in 5 packs. So you will either have to buy a multiple of the magazine capacity (5, 10, 15) to make even reloads, or have some extra loose shells. Fun fact: These shells will load nicely into real steel 8mm Mauser stripper clips. I do that just to keep them together. Now I only wish spare magazines were available for the Double Bell SMLE! I recommend getting a rifle round bandolier to wear while shooting to reload and also a round holder for the stock, so you can top off anytime! Just to be clear, I am not putting down these shells. They work great out of my Kar98k. They just suck as SMLE shells. If you have a Double Bell Kar98k, try getting a pack of these. See how they work. Just the color alone is a relief.
