The M40 was introduced in 1966. The changeover to the A1 model was completed in the 1970s, the A3 in the 2000s. Each M40 is built from a Model 700 bolt-action rifle, and is modified by USMC armorers at Marine Corps Base Quantico, using components from a number of suppliers.
During the Vietnam War, the Marine Corps decided they needed a standard sniper rifle. After testing several possibilities, they ordered seven hundred Model 40x rifles, and gave them the M40 designation. Sometime in the early 1970s, the USMC armorers at MCB Quantico began rebuilding the original M40s into M40A1s. The process involved, among other improvements, replacing the original wood stocks with A1 fiberglass stocks, as well as replacing the original 39— variable-power scopes with 10X fixed-power scopes. The Corps began looking at a replacement for the M40 series in 2004, but did not draft requirements until 2009 while working with SOCOM. The plans for a "21st century sniper rifle" were paused while the Army's results of SOCOM's Precision Sniper Rifle program were finalized in 2013. The Marine Corps eventually decided to continue upgrading the M40A-series and keep the 7.62 NATO round, primarily due to the higher cost of larger rounds and scout sniper training that can achieve kills beyond the weapon's effective range.
Development of the M40A3 began in 1996 and concluded in 2001, when it was placed into service during Operation Enduring Freedom. It served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and other subsequent conflicts. Though its designation would remain M40A3 until 2009, its exact configuration varied with time.

" Gun came quickly, and this time in tact.
" Solid gun, possibly best sniper on the market for the price. I’ve had it for 4 years and only in the last few months the hopup started to go out, still works but the hop is inconsistent. Never uprgraded anything, only added a cheap scope.
Pros:
lightweight (could be a con, I guess)
easy and short bolt pull
accurate
excellent range for the price
top pic rail has a groove in it (i sometimes like to take off the scope and use the groove like iron sights; for some reason the gun lends itself to instinctive shooting
Cons:
Very light
After 4 years I can’t remove the bolt, the spring guide stopper seems wedged in very tightly
Overall, for 90 bucks, you can’t go wrong if you want to start sniping on a budget. throw on a cheap scope, snag an extra mag and some .28’s or .32s and you’ll be good. At some point I might throw in a new bucking and possibly barrel, toss a refles sight on top and use it as a fairly close range sniper.
" I bought this sniper rifle a little over a year ago and I’m highly impressed by its performance all this time. I purchased a scope separately from Academy that I mounted on it. It works best with .42 gram bbs with half hop up; it can hit 60 yard targets consistently but I can’t hit at least 70% of 100 yard shots with it. It’s built nice and sturdy and all in all works great!
