"After having used this red dot for well over 6 months at this point, I can say I am quite satisfied with it's performance.
I do like the solar panel feature as it makes adjusting the brightness a breeze, which is probably why I have never changed the battery on this optic in the time I've owned it. Mounting is easy with the interchangeable riser. Adjusting the zero can be difficult if you have large hands like me, but the caps can be used to accomplish that relatively easily. This optic tends to work best for me in CQB, but I have used it at longer than 25 yard distances with relative accuracy.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this optic for it's quite stellar performance.
Disclaimer: I have only used this optic in airsoft, it hasn't been used on any of my real steel guns.
"This is an optic made for a real gun, by a respected and qualified manufacturer within that industry. With that, you can expect all the qualities and benefits such an optic would provide in airsoft and real steel firearms - precise zeroing, exceptional durability, and solid battery life. It's also a Holosun with solar power, which can turn this optic on even from indoor lights without a battery installed; it's a very powerful backup feature that will save your battery a lot of life. And that is the only reason this thing gets more than the minimum rating.
Unfortunately, one of the core selling points of this particular Holosun is the auto-adjust to light levels. On the surface, this sounds very useful; being able to have your red dot brighten and dim on its own as you move from differently lit areas means you aren't fiddling with the optic by hand. However, this feature is very aggressive, being able to dim dramatically just by leaning into a slightly shaded corner of a well lit room, or brightening in a dark area if a light shines on you. As a result, you can very easily find your vision of a target obscured or (much worse) completely lose your red dot, because you and your intended target are in different light levels. This is a circumstance that can, and almost certainly will, happen often on the field. While the optic can be switched to manual control, it is only temporary, as the auto-adjust will reassert itself after 12 hours. This feature fits the exact definition of a gimmick, and the optic's functionality revolves around it.
If your goal is short duration games, training, or simply shooting at a range that take place all within a single day, this won't be a deal-breaker, and the optic is perfectly useable, provided you stick to manual mode or consistent lighting. If doing any kind of games or real firearms work that last longer than that, this is distinctly not safe. I'd recommend a different optic choice without the solar gimmick, and there are plenty here on Evike. Including other Holosuns.
