"This is a lot of gearbox for the money, with modern features that make traditional gearboxes obsolete. This gearbox makes me wonder why, in 2017, even premium quality manufacturers still produce gearboxes with trigger contacts that burn out, cutoff levers that wear out and fail, and a spring guide design that makes gearbox maintenance a chore. I was so impressed by the V3 version of this gearbox in my Elite Force G36C that I purchased a V2 for my G&P M4. Overall, the G&P box is slightly higher quality and probably a better option if you are looking to build a custom high ROF or high FPS setup, but for shooting out of the box with minimal upgrades I'll take the Ares EFCS all day long.
The only real issue I have with the gearbox is the choice of wiring insulation...it is extremely plasticky and stiff and just a pain to deal with. The wire itself seems to be of acceptable quality but the insulation is just...awful. A thin, flexible, silicone based insulation would be welcome, but is not essential to the performance of the gearbox.
**NOTES ON INSTALLING ARES EFCS INTO G&P M4 RECEIVER**
There is little to no information on what modifications are necessary to fit this gearbox into a G&P receiver...a few vague forum posts and two YouTube videos, neither of which are in English. Here are some notes on what I encountered while installing the EFCS into a standard cast aluminum G&P M4 receiver.
Spring Guide - The QC spring guide is threaded for a buffer tube screw, but the stock G&P screw is too long and will bottom out in the spring guide before tightening up the buffer tube. I used a screw probably half the length of the original and it worked fine, I believe it is an M4 size screw.
Fire Selector Plate/Switch - The Ares selector plate does not move as far forward in the "safe" position as the G&P unit, resulting in the selector switch not clicking into the detente. It stops about halfway between semi and safe. The safety does still function in this position (trigger cannot be pulled), and semi/auto work as expected. Also, if the gearbox is initially installed with the selector switch in the safe position, the rear receiver pin will not fit as it pushes the box too far forward. I did try removing a small amount of material from the U notch in the plate and filing a flat spot on the internal cam of the switch, but I think removing enough material to allow the switch to move fully to safe could result in other fire modes not functioning properly so I left it as-is.
Magazine Release - The "ring" on the front of the Ares gearbox for the mag release to pass through is slightly smaller and more rearward than the G&P box, resulting in a sticky mag release button as it rubs against the inside of the ring. I used a 1/4" drill bit to enlarge the hole in the ring to approximately the same size as the G&P ring and it stopped the rubbing.
General Fit - I did not have to remove any material from the receiver for the Ares gearbox to fit. I did peel out the thin rubber gasket in the rear of the receiver and replace it with a 1mm thick washer to achieve proper nozzle alignment and front to back spacing. With the gearbox installed properly in the receiver, the small receiver pin above the trigger will not fit. The holes in the gearbox are slightly too high to match up with the holes in the receiver and the pin will not pass all the way through. I used a side cutting bit and Dremel to extend the holes downward until the pin fit.
"This is a lot of gearbox for the money. I was so impressed by the V3 version of this gearbox in my Umarex G36C that I purchased a V2 version for my G&P M4. Having said that, if you are looking to build most epic gun to rek nubs with 50 RPS...this probably isn't the gearbox for you to start with. For shooting out of the box with minimal upgrades it is absolutely worth every penny. The QD spring guide makes opening and closing the gearbox infinitely easier than with a standard spring guide, the microswitch trigger is sweet and clicky and responsive, the EFCS unit provides active braking (always a full cycle) and is programmable with the optional setting box.
**NOTES ON FITTING ARES EFCS GEARBOX TO G&P M4 RECEIVER**

Here's what I encountered installing the gearbox in my standard cast aluminum G&P M4 receiver.
Spring Guide - The included QD spring guide is threaded for a standard M4 buffer tube screw (M4 screw size I think), but the stock G&P screw is too long and will bottom out in the Ares spring guide. I used a shorter screw, probably half the length of the original.
Magazine Catch - The "ring" on the front of the gearbox where the mag release passes through the receiver is smaller on the Ares gearbox than the stock G&P unit. It is also slightly more rearward, which leads to the mag release button not operating freely as it rubs on the inside of the ring. I used a 1/4" drill bit to enlarge the ring to approximately the same size as the G&P gearbox to eliminate the rubbing.
Fire Selector Plate and Switch - The selector plate of the Ares gearbox does not move as far forward when the safety is engaged as the stock G&P gearbox plate does. Because of this, the fire selector switch will not fully click into the detent for the safety position, it stops about halfway between semi and safe. The safety does function in this position. Also, installing the gearbox into the receiver with the switch on safe will force the gearbox too far forward for the rear receiver pin to fit through. I tried removing a small amount of material from the "U" notch on the selector plate and filed a flat spot on the internal cam of the fire selector switch, but it wasn't enough to solve the problem. Removing more material could have rendered other fire modes inoperable so I left it as-is.
Motor Connectors - I used the stock G&P M120 motor and it has the screw-in style motor connectors, but the Ares gearbox has standard friction fit connectors. I just drilled a small hole in the connectors and used the screw as normal. It's a bit more fiddly, but I prefer motor connectors that can't fall off unexpectedly to connectors that are easy to install but can also disassemble themselves.
General Fit - I did not find it necessary to remove any material from the receiver. I did peel out the thin rubber gasket on the inside rear of the receiver and replaced it with a 1mm thick washer to get correct nozzle alignment and front/rear alignment of the gearbox for the rear receiver pin and mag catch ring. With the gearbox properly installed, the holes for the small receiver pin above the trigger are not aligned with the holes in the receiver. They are close, but just a bit too high and enough that the pin will not go all the way through. I will probably enlarge the holes in the gearbox the next time I have it open so the pin will fit, but as for now it isn't necessary for the stability of the gearbox and is mainly aesthetic.
